Seeing Beyond / Rest in Peace Octavia Butler

Octavia Butler passed last week to little mainstream fanfare.

My 2 favorites: Kindred and Parable of the Sower. When I read Kindred for the first time (yes, it is one of few books that I've read twice) it was like I was being whooped for being so blind. Here I was caught up in these stupid little categorical (?) boxes and here she was making me see that there are so many possibilities. And really that's all I have to say about that.

She made me see that there are great possibilities that lie in the depths of us and this universe. We ought not be afriad or lazy or "cool" or caught up in what is daily before our eyes to persue them. First that is to be realized. Secondly, we must know our true selves for ourselves -- not separate from our past, but in its context. When armed with that, we can venture anywhere at peace with the fact that in all of these possibilities we can always be ourselves.

Those truths can always co-exist.

Rest in peace.
