Necessity is the Mother of Invention...

I am so inspired by these Zulu imbenge baskets made from telephone wire. Though many African artists have begun to purchase recycled wire due to the popularity of the baskets, there is still much discussion over the costs to African telecom companies who are losing money to copper wire theft.

The upside - many telecom companies are switching to wireless technologies, which could mean more access to technology for more people.

So, what can we make from tv satellite dishes? There seems to be plenty hanging out the windows in my neighborhood... maybe they could be "recycled" into something more profitable... maybe a problem with the infrastructure of many of our own communities - there is no longer invention where there is complacency. I mean, those baskets are woven tight enough to hold water. Let's step up our game.

Thats amazing to see. This is evidence of people becoming self-sufficient no matter what.

I'm with that... functional creativity... so maybe that Negro artists discussion is relevant here too, no?

You know how there are certain books you remember seeing growing up? My parents always had this one:

Square Foot Gardening...

Check it out... I'm looking for more time myself to reclaim some simplicity and allow my brain to metaphorically "turn copper wire into beautiful art..."

what I really meant to say was:

"turn copper wire into beaufitul art and waterholding baskets simultaneously"

yea, that's it. that's what i REALLY wanna do :)
