This is not a paid advertisement. I'm just diggin this small business over in the North Minneapolis and I received the following info in an email today (sorry non-Minneapolis readers!):

Many of you may of heard about the Sad News last week about the Bean Scene. Last week they decided to close this Important Business this week. There is a temporary reprieve. The Bean Scene is important Jordan, It is also Important to the Community and to the revitalization of the North Side and of West Broadway. Although it is still open it will not stay that way unless we get people to spend their money. You want Coffee Beans go to the Bean Scene! You want Coffee or other Hot or Cold drinks visit the Bean Scene. You want a meal visit the Bean Scene. The Money you spend there stays in the Community. Show them how important there are and to the Success of the Northside. Help this north side business while you can!

...There is a mass luncheon tomorrow between the hours of 11:30am and 1:00pm. Gather your friends, co-workers, etc. and go to the Bean Scene for a sandwich or a cup of coffee.

On a personal note, I think small food/service based minority businesses are going to have to start moving towards the co-operative business model. There are just too many options for the community for them to realistically patronize businesses just on account of their ownership. And the "recycling dollar" rhetoric has proved to be ineffective at inspiriting people, myself included, sadly enough. But if I own the businesses that I am being asked to patronize, I think we would see a huge difference. The sacrifice would have to be on the ownership side, where there would be no need for a CEO or central person who'd get all the credit. But that just means some egos would have to be deflated -- but that too is a good thing :)
