So I'm sure that by now everyone has seen the 'Read a Book' video I posted it on the web-log a while back and it has shown up on blogs everywhere...well Messiah posted this interview(via Myspace) done by CNN with Bomani Armah(the song's creator), a critic named Paul Porter, and Tyree Dillihay(the director of the video) and I thought I'd post it here. I am curious as to what people's views really are about this. I personally laughed my ass off when I seen the video for the first time. I understand the satire, but it's really nothing new.
I don't think it deserves as much attention as it's getting, but if we insist, I would challenge young people to ask questions and critically analyze what's in front of them (since even though BET says the video is geared towards 18-34 year olds; we know who's really watching 106andPark)
What do YOU think is the message in the video? Is it purposeful? Necessary? If it provokes people to ask questions, is that a bad thing? Bomani chose pseudo-hip-hop, (or pop-hop as I would call it) as the context for what he sees as a call to people and parents in particular; to be more aware of what their children are watching. Does the message match the content in the video? Is the content appropriate? what about the fact that it was done in the form of the cartoon? How does that affect the interpretation and/or change the audience demographic?(who's really watching?) On a larger scale...why is this getting so much attention? What are/could be some self-interests of all the parties involved? (Viacom, BET, Bomani, Tyree, CNN) I would challenge young people to question. Question. Question

its funny.
the cats who did this are comedians not teachers.
so like richard pryor, their insights are going to funny, truthful, but perhaps not as accurate and clear as actually READING A BOOK! pun intended.
so yes, it is instructional. just to a certain point.
sadly its a commentary on perceptions of how far behind we are that we have to MARKET the act of reading books to kids when people used to risk their lives to do the same thing.
