So I was already in N.Y. for the Live From Planet Earth, Brooklyn Session. And I'm in Union Square about to get on the train. And we're walking, and I hear these horns. I'm like, okay, Brothers are over there playing music, no big thing. Part of me is ready to head home and keep it moving... then there's ANOTHER part that's like, "that music is CALLING you!" So we go on over and I'm just amazed! The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is a lot more than your usual musician crew. Naw, all these Brothers (except for the drummer) are the sons of Sun Ra Arkestra trumpeter Kelan Phil Cohran. Their sound ALONE is enough to make me a fan! But after learning about their upbringing and initiation into the world of music I was completely in awe! And if that wasn't enough, I discovered that they toured Europe with Mos Def in December 2007. Yeah, so I got my album and I'm hyped! MUCH RESPECT

Oh, I was meaning to write about these guys. I found out about them a few weeks ago. They are insanely talented, aren't they? And they're from my hometown (Chicago!!) too so that makes me like them even more. Hopefully I can catch them live sometime soon. Oh and they have a blog too: http://hypnoticbrass.blogspot.com/
