02|12: Howard students protest tuition increase [dc]

Masake Kane writes in to tell us that the Political Education and Action Committee at Howard University is organizing a rally on their campus against the tuition increases passed by their board of trustees recently. The rally takes place tomorrow, Friday February 13th, at noon.

The students are rallying against a distorted "Rate of Increase" in tuition fees, a consistent "lack of transparency" in the university decision-making process, and an unacceptable dependence on tuition in the school's annual operating budget.

As alternatives, the students propose that a decrease in the tuition rate increase for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, greater transparency in university decision-making, and a "diversification of source of funds" for the school's operating budget.
