Intern with The Liberator :)

The Liberator Magazine is currently accepting internship applicants for Summer 2009 in the following departments: Editorial, Circulation and Distribution, Advertising, Marketing, and Visual Arts.

eligibility. The internship is open to any undergraduate or graduate student with a keen interest in learning about and being an integral part of the inner workings of independent print and online media. Previous journalism experience or a journalism career track are not required. The internship will mainly be conducted via satellite, therefore geographic location should not be a concern if you have consistent internet access.

duration. The summer internship spans 7 weeks, running from July 1 until August 19 2009. Specific schedule arrangements will be made upon selection.

compensation. The internship is unpaid, however school credit is available with prior administrative approval.

deadline. All application materials must be e-mailed as an attachment by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Candidates will be notified, via e-mail, no later than close of business on June 24, 2009.

The Liberator is an independent print and online publication founded in 2002 to help preserve humanity by creating and supporting excellent spaces of dialogue that provide fresh and forceful analysis and critique of art, culture, education, and politics. Our print version – published bimonthly – is circulated to 15,000 readers internationally. Our online home, liberatormagazine.com, is updated daily with fresh articles, reviews, essays, visual art and commentary for our 10,000 monthly readers.

Internship opportunities may include but are not limited to the following:

Editorial (please provide one published or unpublished writing sample with application)
The Editorial Intern will be responsible for assisting editors with administrative duties including screening and filtering submissions, conducting interviews, fielding story ideas and engaging in follow-up correspondence with writers or potential leads. Copy editing, substantive editing and proofreading will also be significant part of the internship. The Intern will be encouraged to submit articles, essays and reviews to the daily blog frequently. At the end, the Intern will have the opportunity to submit a single, full-length and bylined article for consideration in our print edition.

Advertising
The Advertising Intern will be heavily engaged in relationship management -- corresponding with all past and present advertising and sponsorship partners to determine how The Liberator can continue to and better meet their needs as a business or organization. The Intern will work closely with staff advertising representatives to cold call, pitch, correspond and close on advertising contracts. Interns will have the opportunity to earn commission on closed ads both new and renewed. Other duties include database management and organization; and seeking new leads to solicit for advertising in all of The Liberator's circulation markets.

Marketing
The Marketing Intern will be significantly involved in maintaining and optimizing the efficiency of our social media presence (MySpace, facebook, twitter); compiling information and distributing our weekly newsletter to readers and potential subscribers; devising marketing and promotions campaigns for local media and event announcing entities for any of The Liberator's “extracurricular” offerings including Live From Planet Earth, panel appearances, study groups, festival sponsorship etc.; building, generating, and maintenance of detailed media lists.

Visual Arts (please provide published or unpublished sample with your application)
The Visual Arts intern will work closely with the Visual Arts team (Art Director and Visual Arts Editor) to both create and secure artwork to accompany articles for the summer issue of The Liberator. The Intern will also assist the Style Editor in compiling the imagery and photo-editing The Liberator's new style section, in addition to other general layout duties. The Intern will be the first point of contact for The Liberator's team of illustrators – communicating deadlines, time frames, updates, art submission opportunities for both The Liberator's print and online versions. Intern may also be responsible for creating ads for advertisers and sponsors if necessarily.

Circulation and Distribution
The Circulation and Distribution Intern will help ensure that the circulation and distribution process is seamless. Subscriber database management will be one of the main duties. The Intern will be responsible for corresponding with subscribers and readers, informing them of renewal dates, subscription specials and distribution opportunities. Intern will also manage issue archives (i.e. inventory). Intern will coordinate distribution process when issue is ready to hit newsstands (mailings).
