Onra [audios]

Onra is an obvious student of the past. A French producer with roots in Vietnam, his first album (Chinoiseries) was built on old Chinese and Vietnamese vinyl records he dug up on a trip. You'll find plenty of echoes throughout his work. What he brings are the top notch tools to build bridges and the courage to improvise a signature or four. So that while I'm nodding my head cool and methodically to "My Comet", mama yangu is bouncing her shoulders and on her toes as she makes herself some lunch. Or humming to "Send Me Your Love" while she eats, despite this being her first time hearing it. And up in Minnesota -- land of Prince and frozen lakes this time of year -- it's against the law not to groove to a title-track like Long Distance (from his 2010 LP). Yessir.
