Books for Children, Knowledge for All / "Children's books as mediator between children, cultural knowledge, and socialization by adults"

"Because literature is a valued cultural commodity, traditions evolve around its definitions, functions and value... Children's literature serves the important role of mediator between children, cultural knowledge, and socialization by adults. Moreover, because children's literature has long maintained this traditional role in society, it possesses both symbolic and real power."
-Violet J. Harris, "African American Children's Literature: The First One Hundred Years", Freedom's Plow (1993)

I want to share some wonderful books for children, with lessons for all. Most are available in your local library, please do explore them. Many of these books are included in the Philadelphia Freedom School's curriculum, and many more exist. Every child should have exposure to these books.
