Chicago Underground Duo [audios]

Since 1997, cornetist Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor have been the Chicago Underground Duo, a spin-off from the avant-garde jazz Chicago Underground collective -- including the Chicago Underground Orchestra, the Chicago Underground Trio and the Chicago Underground Quartet. Their 5th project (the 11th project of the Chicago Underground Collective as a whole), "Boca Negra", aka "Black Mouth", recorded in Sao Paulo, finds the group showered with critical praise. The term, inspired in the Tenerife Canary Islands, evoking the idea of an endless intake of information and the mouth of the volcano Tiede, is a fitting symbol for their constant exchange on this album between the composed and the improvised; playing at the entrance separating the infinite void from the more-knowable created world. Powerful to ambient, folk to polyrhythmic, high energy to ballads.
