LA-based duo Nguzunguzu (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) first met at the Art Institute of Chicago several years back and have been creating and producing sounds since. Their music can be characterized by a blend of R&B/Cumbia/Kuduro/Tribal/Reggaeton/House elements and what Maroof calls ‘sad sexy scary.' Asma served as DJ on MIA's last tour and they also mixed her Vicki Leekx mixtape. The pair are currently working under the Fade To Mind label and making music out of their Elysian Park studio/apartment. Nguzunguzu also made a mark in the underground LA party scene with their weekly WILDNESS parties which they hosted with DJ Total Freedom. Their name nguzunguzu is derived from a traditional figurehead which was formerly affixed to canoes in the Solomon Islands. After releasing their Timesup EP earlier this year, they released a podcast with XLR8R in July which includes a remix of Jhene Aiko's "Stranger". The parties I've been to where one or both of the duo were spinning have never disappointed and offer an on point blend of rhythm and occasional nostalgia.
